Second coyote attack in two weeks reported in BC community – Coast Mountain News

A second coyote attack on a dog owner and his pet has been reported in Langley.

According to a social media post, it happened early Friday morning July 15 in the community of Aldergrove, a few blocks from Robertson Crescent and 244th Street, the scene of a similar incident on July 29. June when a group of three coyotes attacked a small dog. while he was walking.

This time, a large dog, a German shepherd, was allegedly the target of a pack of coyotes.

The dog and the owner escaped.

If confirmed, it would be the second such incident in this area of ​​Aldergrove in two weeks.

Conservation Officer Eric Tyukodi told the Langley Advance Times that an investigation into the two incidents is in the preliminary stages. He wouldn’t speculate if it was a situation similar to the problems created by aggressive coyotes in Vancouver’s Stanley Park.

Two coyotes had to be euthanized after around 13 people were chased around Brockton Oval and Hollow Tree near Prospect Point in Stanley Park between December 2020 and January 2021, some bitten enough to require medical attention.

Tyukodi said any incident involving people and wildlife is automatically investigated by the BC Conservation Officer Service (COS).

Aldergrove resident Kristy Addison, who nearly lost her seven-year-old baby Keeshond Cena to three coyotes in the July 29 incident, was dismayed to learn of a second such incident in the same area .

“It was about five blocks away,” Addison estimated.

“It looked like the same three coyotes. I’m actually quite surprised, I thought so [the attack on June 29] was going to be a stroke of luck.

Addison suffered bruises and her trouser legs were chewed off when one of the coyotes tried to jump out and attack her dog, which she had lifted onto her shoulders.

She and her dog were rescued when a couple in an SUV intervened, scaring away the coyotes and getting Addison and Cena home safely.

Hours after Friday’s incident was reported, a local resident posted a warning on Facebook about a coyote den in the 252nd Street and 54th Avenue area.

“[They] don’t move until we scream and wave our arms,” the resident advised.

“[They] almost caught our dog the other day. We don’t let her out unless she’s wearing her coyote coat [a spiked jacket designed to discourage coyotes from attacking].”
