NOTL Hosts Coyote Information Session

With an increase in coyote sightings in Niagara-on-the-Lake, the city wants to make sure residents know how to handle them.

The city is hosting a virtual information session on Wednesday, April 27 at 6 p.m. with Coyote Watch Canada, the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry, the Lincoln County Humane Society and the Regional Police Service of Niagara.

Registration is not required and the video will be available for viewing after it is uploaded.

Several Niagara-on-the-Lake residents, particularly in the Old Town, cited recent incidents involving coyotes.

They have been spotted in broad daylight, roaming neighborhoods, roaming lawns and backyards, getting into trash bags and – in a few incidents – causing attacks on pet dogs.

According to Coyote Watch Canada, spring marks the calf-rearing season for coyotes, which may mean more coyote sightings, although “each individual and/or canid family reacts in unique ways to seasonal milestones,” says Coyote Watch Canada. their website.

The city tracks coyote sightings through residents who submit a form available on the city’s website when they see one.

On its website, the city suggests that if a coyote is near your home, pick up small children and pets.

They suggest waving your arms above your head and being “big and loud” in an attempt to deter a coyote and, of course, never feed a coyote.

“Reducing food sources has been shown to be very helpful in reducing the presence of coyotes in particular areas,” the site reads. “Therefore, residents are reminded to remove/cover all outdoor food sources, including pet food, bird feeders, uncovered garbage and recycling bins.”
