How to get a canine companion in Metal Max Xeno Reborn
- What does a canine companion do?
- Equip Pochi with weapons and armor
The future that Metal Max Xeno Reborn imagine is disastrously dark. There’s nuclear war, drastic climate change, a second ice age, and weird animal-robot-hybrid-kaiju-tank things going wild! Most human lives have died and the remaining survivors are in critical condition. So, is there any apparent hope in the dystopian world of Desert Tokyo?
Luckily, one of Earth’s most fantastic friends and companions still exists in the apocalypse. Yeah! We’re talking cute, loyal, reliable doggos! (Sorry, felines, but do we really need more tips at Armageddon?) Pochi, your canine party companion, will become a vital asset in your adventures. However, you will need to find them first before they join your party. Want this dose of fur? Here’s everything you need to know.
What does a canine companion do?
A canine companion plays a supporting role in your party. Although you can’t directly control their actions, you can teach them skills and equip them with weapons that will help you in battle. In addition to attacking enemies, canine companions can dig for items, ward off enemies with a fierce bark, and heal other party members. Plus, they provide the joy of friendship that only a puppy can provide!
Fun fact: Canine companions even have a skill called Peewhich alerts your party when a battle with an enemy is too much for you to handle.
Mankind’s Best Friend
The sub-quest required to add Pochi to your party is called Mankind’s best friend. It will start when you hear a cry from somewhere in Toyomi Well.
hear a cry
Finding the source of the dog’s moans is similar to a game of Marco Polo. The closer you are to the puppy, the louder and more obvious the barking becomes. Here are the directions to the Pochi location:
- Go down the well channel to a bunch of debris on the left side.
- The pile of debris cannot fit your tank. You’ll have to get out of your vehicle and walk through the debris.
- Once past the rubble, Turn left and go down the road to abandoned garage.
- You will see a carcass next to a fallen necklace and chain outside damaged garage door. This area is where the dog hid.
Lay the bait
After finding the dog’s location, your next task is to lure them out of hiding. Therefore, you will need to lay bait. You will be presented with three options. Picking out Ant legs. This treat is the only dog food you will have at this early stage of the campaign.
Once you’ve set your bait, you may find yourself eager to meet your new canine companion. However, you will need to be patient first. Interacting with the bait immediately after setting it will trigger a dialog that suggests you wait until the dog feels comfortable enough to leave its hiding place and accept the bait.
So what can you do to pass the time? If you still feel restless, you can continue exploring the Tokyo desert. However, we suggest return to Iron Base and rest for a few days for faster results.
Return to where you placed your bait after a few days. You’ll find Pochi outside eating the bait if you’ve waited long enough. Interact with Pochi to add them to your party. You can even give them a different name if you prefer! However, for the sake of clarity, we’ll stick with Pochi (plus, we like the name).
Here is an Easter egg: Be sure to thoroughly investigate the abandoned garage where Pochi is hiding. If you look hard enough, you find a notepossibly from the original owner of the dog.
Equip Pochi with weapons and armor
Pochi’s gear menu is similar to that of regular party members, but on a smaller scale. They can equip a weapon, a piece of armor and an accessory. Additionally, they have a skill tree to learn new abilities. Bringing Pochi back to Iron Base will immediately give you a cannon for them.
You can find your first dog accessory on the other side of the garage where you found Pochi. This treasure is in an unopened crate. the accessory, Yellow Pochi, imparts significant electrical resistance.
Interact with Pochi
While stationed at Iron Base, you can spend some quality time with Pochi. These actions help cement a bond with your dog and can even give him skill points to learn new abilities. Here are some of the activities you can do with your canine companion.
- Pet the Puppy: An affectionate action to cheer up your dog. The game recommends petting your pup a lot for a job well done.
- Feed: Feed your puppy various consumables, such as Ant legs, animal flesh, slime cells or dog food. Feeding your puppy dog food will give him skill points.
- Shake: A trick you can teach your pup. This skill takes time to learn.
- Beg: Another trick you can teach your puppy. This skill also takes time to learn.
