Coyote softball wins key conference sweep from Avila

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For only the third time this season, and the second time in a Kansas Conference game, the Kansas Wesleyan softball team swept a doubleheader. The Coyotes swept Avila on Saturday winning Game 1 11-1 and Game 2 6-2 at Zarda Multisport Complex.

The wins boosted Wesleyan’s record to 15-16 overall and 9-5 in the KCAC, and the Coyotes currently sit fourth in the conference standings, one game ahead of Friends and Saint Mary, and one game behind McPherson.

The Coyotes used the long ball to win Game 1 11-1 in five innings under the run rule.

After Jocelyn Alcala (SO/Fullerton, Calif.) hit an error in the first inning, Mia Hernandez (FR/Hanford, Calif.) connected on a 2-run homer to give the United States a 2-0 lead. Coyotes. After Samantha Herrera (FR/Lake Jackson, TX) walked and Brianna McGinnis (SR/Tucson, Arizona) doubled up, Bailey Rivas (SO/West Covina, CA) kicked off a third run with a sacrifice ball to carry the score at 3-0.

The Coyotes added two more in the second on Alcala’s sacrificial volley that scored Lauren Blue (SR/Arlington, TX), who doubled up earlier in the inning, and Hernandez kicked a run with a single.

Wesleyan used a small little ball in the third to get another run, Rivas retired to open the inning but reached wild ground, then went to third on the sacrificial bunt of Miranda Guerrero (JR/Oxnard, Calif.), then scored on defenseman’s pick Carmen Angulo (SR/Long Beach, Calif.) who didn’t give up a strikeout.

Avila got a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Coyotes blew the game up in the top of the fifth. Guerrero started on an error and Angulo followed with a single. Elizabeth Willison (SO/Moore, Okla.) picked up three spots later and hit, but reached wild ground to load the bases for Hernandez. Avila was walking Hernandez to force a run. Samantha Herrera then stepped up and smashed a left ball for a grand slam to make it 11-1 in favor of the Coyotes.

Both Hernandez and Herrera had four points in the game. Hernandez with two hits, Herrera with three hits. Angulo was stellar in the circle again for the Coyotes, allowing a run on four hits with five strikeouts to make it 11-4.

The Coyotes kept the momentum going in Game 2.

Herrera kicked a run in the top of the first, scoring Alcala on a single, after Alcala scored earlier in the inning.

Wesleyan added more in the second as Rivas and Jenna Soule (FR/Overland Park, Kan.) both walked to start the inning, and Paige Anderson (JR/Lakeville, Minn.) drove a run with a hit. , as did Alcala giving the Coyotes a 3-0 lead.

Avila got a run in the third on a wild pitch, but the Coyotes responded right away in the fourth. Soule started with a brace, followed by walks to Lauren Blue and Anderson. Two batters later, Hernandez threw another run with a sacrifice fly.

Hernandez would hit his second homer of the doubleheader to lead the start of the seventh inning, and another run would score on an Avila error in the inning.

Jewell Henry (SO/Kingston, Okla.) pitched five relief innings for the Coyotes to claim the win after Angulo started and pitched the first two innings. Henry allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four. Anderson and Alcala had two hits apiece for the Coyotes. Hernandez drove in two.

The Coyotes are back in action Tuesday, hosting Southwestern in a doubleheader at Bill Burke Park at 2 p.m.
