Coyote flag football falls in Ottawa in final game of regular season

OTTAWA – Kansas Wesleyan flag football dropped the final game of the 2022 regular season against the Ottawa Braves on Friday night at AdventHealth Field in Ottawa.

The Coyotes headed for KWU 39 on their first practice, but turned the ball over in tryouts. Ottawa scored on the ensuing push, but the Coyotes stopped the extra run attempt to make it 6-0 with 5:02 left in the quarter.

Wesleyan turned it on his next practice on an interception that set Ottawa’s next score with 3:32 left in the first, making it 12-0.

The Coyotes were knocking Ottawa down on tries and it only took two plays for the Coyotes to score. Brianna Hernandez-Silva (JR/Las Vegas, NV) would find Angel Roman (FR/Jacksonville, Fla.) over the Ottawa defense for 48 yards to make it 13-6 with 8:17 to play. in the second.

Ottawa scored in its next two practices to take a 26-6 lead in the half.

Ottawa scored on their first practice of the second half, but the Coyotes responded right away. The Coyotes would walk downfield and Hernandez-Silva would run it from 24 yards with 1:34 left in third to make it 32-13.

Ottawa scored again but once again the Coyotes fought back.

Hernandez-Silva would rush from Ottawa’s 10 after a penalty on the Braves this game KWU a first down and side to Ja’Daa Wilson (FR / Crawfordville, Fla.) for an eight-yard touchdown run to make it 39- 19 with 8:11 remaining.

Ottawa added another touchdown to cap the game.

Hernandez-Silva was 16 of 30 passing for 159 yards with a touchdown. She also added 86 rushing yards and a touchdown. Angel Roman had four receptions for 77 yards and a score, while Cui Waialae (FR/Las Vegas, Nevada) caught 41 yards on four catches.

Roman had an interception for the Coyotes defense and led the Coyotes with seven flag strikes.

The Coyotes finish the regular season with a 7-6 record and a 6-2 record in the KCAC.

KWU is now gearing up for the KCAC Invitational Tournament on April 22-23 in Ottawa.

The NAIA Finals will take place May 13-14 in Atlanta, Georgia. Flag Football remains an emerging sport within the NAIA.
