Canine flu epidemic cases double in one month

SILVER LAKE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) – There has been an increase in canine flu and leptospirosis cases since the initial outbreak in August, according to the Los Angeles Department of Public Health.

They have now reported 200 cases of canine influenza and 119 cases of leptospirosis. That’s more than double the numbers for the two of last month.

“The number of cases we’ve seen has been almost overwhelming,” said veterinarian Dr Mike McClenahan.

Dr Sehaj Grewal said he has already diagnosed a few cases of leptospirosis and is giving out around five leptospirosis vaccines a day.

“I was a little surprised by this. I think it’s a problem,” Dr Grewal said.

There are vaccines for canine flu and leptospirosis. Doctors recommend buying them even though they have only been recommended to owners who groom or care for their dogs in the past.
