The cure prevents the disease from recurring, say the scientists.
Slovaks call the disease “bloody pee”, because its first symptom is dark red urine. This serious dog disease, caused by parasites spread by ticks, is called babesiosis. It can be potentially deadly.
Slovakia has seen an increase in cases of the disease in recent years, in particular due to completely new causes – parasites that were not previously found in the country or only appeared sporadically before. They are now occurring more often due to various factors including climate change, free market, population migration and others.
The new parasites are responsible for a more severe form of the disease which has so far been resistant to the usual treatment.
Scientists from the Institute of Parasitology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice have developed a new effective treatment for the most severe form of babesiosis.
It completely eliminates the parasites in the dog’s blood and prevents the recurrence of the disease, say the scientists.
