Cool facts about System of a Down

Anyone in the rock and roll industry is familiar with the American band System of a Down. Formed in 1994, the band consists of four Armenian-American musicians who are known for their sincere opinions, often expressed in their songs. The band’s lyrics are not comfortable as the members often appeal to strong topics in their songs such as the Armenian genocide in 1915 or the current “war on terror”.

However, there are plenty of other interesting things about System of a Down you should know, so here are a few.

Known for their political message

Although many of the current rock bands prefer to sing about fame or love, System of a Down always had a different approach regarding their musical. Most of their songs are full of political content which criticizes the current state of the world, including its wars and the tensions between different countries.

Coincidence or not, one of the band’s most famous albums, Toxicity, managed to be at the top of the Billboard Charts at the same time the United States was coping with the disaster of the 9/11 attacks back in 2001. In addition, the video for the band’s song Boom! was created during a global protest against war.

Name origins

The origin of the band’s name has drawn plenty of speculations throughout the years. The group was formerly called “Victims of a Down”, after a poem with the same name written by the band’s leading vocalist, Daron Malakian.

However, the first word, “victim” was changed with “system” because the rockers believed it would appeal to a much wider audience, and also because they wanted to be alphabetically placed closer to their musical heroes, Slayer.

According to some speculations, the name also appears to be a colloquial euphemism for electoral fraud, which would make sense given the band’s interest in politics, environment, and world problems in general.

Different members

John Dolmayan was not the initial drummer of System of a Down. In fact, in the first few years of activity, Andy Khachaturian was the first drummer but he injured one of his hands after practicing martial arts and had to perform a surgery. After the surgery, he had to leave the band and was replaced by Dolmayan shortly after.

Interested in arts

Apart from being a great bassist, Shavo Odadjian, one of the band’s members, has other artistic interests too. He has a fruitful acting career which he started from a young age – he was even cast in an AC/DC video. In addition, he is a director, starred in a documentary about the band, and provided meaningful artworks for plenty of the band’s side projects.

Things you need to know before adopting a pet hedgehog

A hedgehog is definitely not an ordinary pet that can be found in any ordinary home. It is a quirky little animal that is suited for someone who wants to stand out, and that has elevated tastes. And because they are not known by the general public, you need to do your proper research and analyzing before buying one, to make sure you know how to take care of it.

In my quest towards vet school, I have read many articles related to these little creatures, as they sparked my interest. They look very sharp and spiky to the touch, but almost everybody I have talked to about them, and that has encountered a hedgehog in their path, has told me they are actually shy and lovable animals that have an outdated reputation.

People have divided opinions when it comes to having one as a pet. One of the main reasons is because they think wild animals should stay wild. But at the same time, cats and dogs were once wild and taming them proved to be a good thing for the species. But if you do adopt one, make sure its environment matches the one in the wild.

In order to make sure your hedgehog is healthy and has a good genetic history, look out for a trustworthy breeder. Or at least give a chance to a responsible seller, that treats the animals with care and dedication, and doesn’t use them as money making machines. Most pet-rescue shelters have hedgehogs waiting for a new life, so consider this option too.

These pets are nocturnal, so when you rescue one, your schedule will need a bit of an adjustment. If you try to make them be active during the day, they will get sick, as their internal clock will be conflicted. At night, the lights should be dimmed or even turned off in the room the pet is living, as its eyes are sensitive to light. Also, try to find a good vet in your community, since not all vets know how to deal with the special companion.

A proper cage is an essential when raising a hedgehog. It has to be easy to use, as you are going to clean it often, and make sure it is made from the right materials. Avoid glass and other potentially dangerous elements, since these pets like to climb and to chew. When it comes to size, even if they are tiny creatures, the cage should be large enough for them to run and hide as they wish.

They are not cheap pets to raise. They require time, money and dedication. But they are usually worth it because they are unique and funny looking, and will make you laugh for hours.

Here’s what you need to become a chinchilla owner

Owning a pet is a great act of responsibility which I encourage people to take even from the earliest ages. Sure, a kid will not always perfectly look after his or her pet, but this is the perfect way to teach your child to look after others that are needier.

And while dogs and cats are demanding and require enough of your time and resources, I suggest starting with smaller pets in exchange. Rodents are extremely popular and most of them don’t require special conditions or too much effort on your behalf.

Although it is not entirely the case with chinchillas, these amazing rodents will easily grow on you and make you squeeze out the latest drop of love you have left. Owning a chinchilla will not be easy, so here is everything you need to know prior and after your acquisition.

Prepare for your chinchilla

The first thing you need to take into account is that owning such a pet will not come cheap. In fact, looking after a chinchilla is costly as they are pretentious rodents that require the best of everything in order to survive and live a happy and full existence.

So, prepare to invest a big part of your savings into buying a comfortable cage and assuring the best meal out there.

Cages are extremely important for chinchillas, so make sure to have a proper one before your pet arrives. Keep in mind that chinchillas are mainly nocturnal animals, so they won’t be too active during the day.

They require a quiet and dark place in your room, away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Chinchillas tend to be quite loud during the night so if their noises bother you, I suggest keeping the cage as far as possible from your bed.

As for the cage itself, it is best to buy a large one with enough room to wander, stretch, and exercise a little.

The temper of chinchillas

These are beautiful and extremely sensitive creatures that need to be treated accordingly. At first, they are shy and rather introvertive, so make sure to avoid fast moves or large love gestures from the beginning.

Chinchillas tend to very affectionate, caring, and loving, once they trust their owners. The best way to grow on your chinchilla is through small gestures of affection on a regular basis. Allow your pet to approach you on its own terms and do not rush things out.

They will come to you as soon as they are ready, and will give you their full love once they realize there is nothing to be scared of.

Last but not least, chinchillas often need company not to feel alone and bored. It is best to have at least one pair of chinchillas if you want to keep your pets happy but if you cannot afford to look after two such animals at the same time, just make sure to offer your pet constant love and pampering.

Iceland gets its first hedgehog

Although the global trend in the past few years was to welcome more hedgehogs into the pet family, people from Island have a long and uncommon pet history over the years. Hedgehogs have become and more popular in the past few years, being preferred first as exotic pets, and now as common pets that can easily accommodate and live together along with other pets, including dogs and cats.

Hedgehogs are quite friendly creatures and seeing them eat is one of the most adorable things the Internet has shared lately. But what happened in Iceland, and, most importantly, what are the things that make rules in this country so special? Read below and find everything you need to know.

Iceland and animals

One of the world’s coldest and smallest countries, Iceland features a highly limited flora and fauna. In other words, it’s too cold for most of the creatures to accommodate, and the scarce food doesn’t do them justice either. Back in the 1920s, the country’s capital has banned all dogs for uncertain reasons. And, even though the ban disappeared later, there is still highly uncommon for Icelanders to own dogs as pets. On the other hand, furry cats that purr all day long seem to have a less cruel faith, while people all over the country are buying or adopting an increased number of cats each year.

As for other animals, as I previously mentioned, there are few that can be adopted or, even worse, imported. This makes things even more interesting for the first hedgehog Iceland ever laid eyes on, earlier this year.

So, if you plan on flying in with your own pet, I suggest you reconsider. The laws are quite strict and you may even be refused access to certain cities of the country if you own a pet. Moreover, Icelanders are already tired of the tourist masses that cross pass their country every year and tend to be less welcoming when you overstay.

The story of Bernie the hedgehog

Although you may not consider Iceland as the best hedgehog house, the authorities have finally seem to soften up and accept the little hedgehog into their country. The owners of Bernie adopted the fellow back in 2015, but it was not until 2016 that they filed for paperwork to legally transfer Bernie to Iceland. The first application was rejected, and it was not until 2017 that the authorities reconsidered and granted access to Bernie in Iceland.

Upon arrival, due to the same Icelandic laws, the animal had to undergo different tests of its physical condition and spent another four weeks in quarantine before reuniting with its owners.
